Mania Screening Test

The following is a questionnaire designed to help you rate the severity of mania symptoms you are currently experiencing.

The test assesses your state of mind and behavior over the past week, in order to estimate the level of mania you are facing.

This assessment is known as the Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale (ASRM) and is based on the work of Altman et al., (1997).

Pick the numbered statement (1–5) that best matches how you’ve been over the past 7 days.

Question 1 / 5

Mood (past 7 days):

1. I do not feel happier or more cheerful than usual.
2. I occasionally feel a bit happier or more cheerful than usual.
3. I often feel noticeably happier/more cheerful than usual.
4. I feel very cheerful or “high” most of the time, and it’s obvious to others.
5. I feel extremely “high” or euphoric to the point it causes problems or concern.

Self-confidence (past 7 days):

1. My self-confidence is the same as usual.
2. I sometimes feel a bit more confident than usual.
3. I often feel more confident than usual and take on more than normal.
4. I feel very confident or unusually capable most of the time.
5. I feel extremely confident/grand in a way that’s unrealistic or causes problems.

Need for sleep (past 7 days):

1. I sleep about the same amount as usual.
2. I sleep a little less than usual and feel okay.
3. I sleep much less than usual and still feel energetic.
4. I sleep very little and still don’t feel tired.
5. I hardly sleep at all and still feel full of energy.

Talkativeness (past 7 days):

1. I talk about the same as usual.
2. I’m sometimes more talkative than usual.
3. I’m often much more talkative than usual, and others notice.
4. I frequently feel pressure to keep talking and it’s hard to stop.
5. I talk almost nonstop or feel unable to stop talking, causing problems.

Activity/energy (past 7 days):

1. My activity/energy is about the same as usual.
2. I’m sometimes a bit more active/energized than usual.
3. I’m often much more active/energized than usual (more projects, more restlessness).
4. I’m extremely active/restless most of the time and have trouble sitting still.
5. I’m so overactive/energized that it causes impairment or risky behavior.
